After a recent electrical fire, Metro maintenance ran a complete safety inspection and found power cables that were damaged, missing components, or simply poorly installed. With this information, Metro’s general manager, Paul Wiedefeld, derived a plan to improve safety and reliability over the next year. This plan squeezes three years of maintenance into one year.
Starting in June, late night service will no longer be offered Fridays and Saturdays. The Metro will begin to slow down at 8:00pm every night after rush hour, and will close at midnight. Also beginning in June, rolling closures will continue through May 2017. They will mainly be at suburban stations in Maryland and Virginia.
