D.C. Theaters Launched an Open Caption Pilot Program. Why Are Deaf Moviegoers So Skeptical of It?




For those of you who aren’t quite sure about the difference between open and closed captions - or have simply not thought about it before – open captioning displays the captions on the screen for everyone, whereas closed captioning devices show captions to an individual.

If you follow us you know that we post the open captioned movies for the coming week on Thursdays. We’ve been doing that for a while now. And an occasional video of how they work, or info about new legislation. This is one of those. The National Association of Theater Owners recently announced that they would be expanding open caption showtimes in D.C. throughout the summer as part of a pilot program. Sounds swell right? Well, maybe not. The members of DC Deaf Moviegoers have a different point of view.
