Mattel’s Barbie Gets More Diverse in 2020

If you're a little girl with a prosthetic limb, alopecia or the skin condition vitiligo, there's now a Barbie doll that looks just like you.

The 2020 additions to Mattel's Barbie Fashionistas line are the company's latest nod to making sure its dolls reflect more of society's diversity.

Barbie was once criticized by some observers for promoting a narrow, unrealistic ideal of what is beautiful. But the brand has been on a diversity push over the last five years, unveiling dolls with an array of skin tones, hair textures, body sizes and facial structures.

There are Barbies with less defined waists, varying bust sizes and sculpted arms. And the doll in a wheelchair even has her own ramp.

Barbie's focus on a more expansive idea of beauty reflects a broader shift that is impacting not only the toy industry but the worlds of fashion and politics as well.

Inclusion is cool;) What Barbie would you buy?

DeadBlind Interpreting Institute is Accepting Applications!!!

Applications are now open for the 2020 DeafBlind Interpreting Institute (DBII) cohort. We have piloted this program with the 2018 & 2019 cohorts and revised and improved our training and are ready for 2020! Now is the time to apply!

The call for applications will close on Sunday, February 2nd at 9PM PST.

Check out the 2020 DBII webpage for full details! https://www.dbinterpreting.org/

There is no other intensive, immersion opportunity preparing interpreters to work with DeafBlind folks and their language. We are grateful to the amazing DeafBlind leaders, teachers, trainers, and mentors who are partnering with DBI to make this program and its content a reality!
Under the direction of DeafBlind leaders and DBI staff, cohort participants will learn more about DeafBlind culture and protactile language through a 100-hour intensive experience, including an 8-week online learning community, 1-week onsite for protactile language immersion, and 10+-hours of service and applied learning (induction) in the participant's home community with DeafBlind individuals.

DBI has already received a high volume of interest in this training and we can only admit a total of 64 participants for the 2020 cohorts (32 in each cohort), so be sure to SPREAD THE WORD and ENCOURAGE FOLKS TO APPLY!
