Last weekend, Christina and Brian, along with their
daughter, Mikayla, saw Children of a Lesser God on Broadway. The show was
captioned by GalaPro - but only the spoken lines, everything signed by the
actors (deaf and hearing) was not captioned. There were no interpreters. The
Speech therapist, James Leeds (played by Joshua Jackson of Fringe and The Affair),
spoke as he signed and also voiced for the Deaf actors.
"The show was beyond words! Lauren Ridloff (of Wonderstruck, If You Could Hear My Own Tune)
was a multifaceted and amazingly complex Sarah Norman.
The show explored the nuances between a hearing man and a
Deaf woman in a relationship, the couple and the Deaf world, the couple and the
hearing world, and Sarah feeling torn between the two, through thought
provoking situations.
There are also hidden gems throughout the show for those who
know ASL. Because they don't caption signs, there are times when signs (usually
snarky ones) are not interpreted, much to the enjoyment of we who understand;)
All of the actors must be commended on their passion. You
can feel their fervor in their signs and speech. It radiates through your body
giving you chills.
I wholeheartedly recommend this show for everyone to see -
Deaf, hard-of-hearing, hearing, doesn't matter - this show will touch you in
amazing ways. By the end I was in tears. Phenomenal.
After the show, we ran into Fred Beam of the Wild Zappers.
We are close friends with Wawa (also from the Wild Zappers) and had met Fred
years ago at Wawa's house."
